In May 2012, Project Manager Theresa McAnnar traveled to Accra, Ghana to direct construction of a tilapia pond on site at a children’s home outside Accra, the capital of Ghana.  This home was a labor of love for the woman who ran it – known by all as “Mommy.”  This is Mommy’s life work – to care for the unwanted children of her community.  She has had the support of several German non governmental organizations for infrastructure and a Dutch group tried a fish farm, but fish were never harvested.

Our project directive was to educate, refurbish the existing overgrown pond, connect it to a nearby water source – the river – install a control valve in that connection, and clean up the debris and overgrowth.  We purchased an aerator, located a source for fingerlings, and purchased 1,000 tilapia and 6 months of feed.  Attendants were identified  and they were given the education necessary to  care for the fish and maintain the sustainability of the project.
